Sanctions affecting Russian population in everyday activities
19.12.2022
Sanctions imposed on Russia by the West, so far have not caused the economic collapse as expected. However, they are having unexpected effects and are hitting Russians hard in their daily lives, Poland’s daily Rzeczpospolita reported.
Due to the war in Ukraine, many sanctions have been imposed on Russia since February. Although the restrictions have still not affected Moscow in a crushing way, Russian citizens are already feeling many of the restrictions on their own skin.
According to Rzeczpospolita, there is a shortage of goods, services are limited, the internet has become slower than in pre-war times, crematoria are out of order and on top of this, there is a shortage of manpower looming over Russia, due to further mobilisations.
Russia is also having difficulties as regards aviation, as the sanctions left no one available to train new pilots.
Energy supply
Furthermore, Russia might also have a problem with their energy supply in the winter as the most modern thermal power plants run on Western gas turbines. Sanctions make servicing and the purchase of spare parts impossible. Foreign turbines work, among others, in municipal power plants and heating plants in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Yekaterinburg and other large cities, Rzeczpospolita reported.
Russia’s economy is dependent on imports from Europe. Although there is an overabundance of gas, a third of Russians and regions have no access to it at all, the daily noted.
The government in Moscow is now urgently trying to develop its technological possibilities to break its dependence on Western supplies.
