President Donald Trump appoints envoy for Greenland annexation

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his intention to annex Greenland, a Danish territory, stating, “We need Greenland not for minerals but for national security.” Trump said during a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida, on the 22nd, “If you look up and down the coast of Greenland, there are Russian and Chinese ships everywhere. The U.S. must have Greenland,” emphasizing this point. Trump, who has advocated for the annexation of Greenland since taking office early this year, also claimed in March, “Russian and Chinese ships are floating in Greenland’s waters,” and “Greenland is a matter of international peace, international security, and power.”

Greenland is evaluated as a strategic stronghold for U.S. and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) defense. This is because it is located at a choke point that blocks the entry of China and Russia into the Atlantic. A Chinese cargo ship that passed through the Arctic route last October arrived in the UK in 20 days, halving the time required. Another potential threat is that Russian submarines could tap into or destroy undersea cables laid near Greenland’s waters. From the U.S. perspective, Greenland is also considered a suitable location for installing a ballistic missile warning system for continental defense.

During the press conference, Trump mentioned Jeff Landry, the Louisiana governor, whom he appointed as a special envoy to Greenland the previous day, saying, “Landry will lead the charge.” Consequently, Landry is expected to take the lead in the attempt to annex Greenland. As a special envoy is not an official diplomat, they can operate without the approval of the host country. Immediately after his appointment, Landry stated, “I am honored to take on the role of making Greenland part of the United States.”
