A devastating disaster has struck Nepal after a massive collapse high in the Himalayas sent ice, rock, mud and water racing through valleys near the Tibet border with almost no warning.
Authorities and media reports currently place the death toll at roughly 900 to 1,000 people, while more than 4,700 remain missing across Nepal and Tibet. The figures are still changing as rescue teams reach isolated areas and authorities reconcile casualty and missing-person lists.
Scientists believe the disaster began when a huge section of glacier and mountain rock broke away near Langtang Lirung. More than 100 million cubic metres of material may have come down the mountain. The collapse was powerful enough to register on seismic instruments even though there was no major earthquake or rainfall event at the time. The debris rushed into the river system and created a destructive surge downstream. Within minutes, water, ice, rock and mud were moving through the valley toward the Nepal–Tibet border, destroying roads, bridges, settlements and hydropower infrastructure.
Hundreds of hydropower workers remain unaccounted for. Rescue teams are also searching underground tunnel systems where workers may have been trapped after entrances were buried by mud and debris. Rasuwagadhi, Timure and other communities along the corridor were heavily damaged, while sections of the main road connecting Nepal with China were washed away. Many areas remain difficult to reach, forcing rescuers to depend heavily on helicopters.
Authorities are also monitoring rivers and newly formed lakes upstream. Unstable debris and trapped water continue to raise concerns about another sudden flood, keeping rescue crews and communities downstream on alert.
